Robin Hood and His Morose Men

Chuck Hatcher as Little John wacks Brian Roskow, one of the complaining Morose Men

It was another Saturday dinner when the staff realized they didn't have a skit yet. The staff in those years were all about improv so all they really needed was a general theme. Campfire was going to be outside over in the old riflery range turned outdoor theatre. Mike Mattson and Justin Ingold adventured over to the range and started throwing out adventure ideas. Justin started to talk about an obnoxiously happy Robin Hood, and within a minute, like a lightbulb, Mike came up with the idea of Robin Hood and His Morose Men. It was perfect. The staff was told the title and to arrive with an appropriate outfit. There was no script.

Justin was really peppy and all the other players were lazy and complaining. Justin led them all through the audience and up and down the back walls of the range, helping his men and being positive. The men were just plain grumpy with lines of hilarious improv. Chuck Hatcher played Little John which made Brian Roskow and Mike Mattson grumble, "He's not very little" every time they had to help Chuck up a hill. It was a Monty Python type of skit.

Robin spent much of the skit trying to get his men to sing but they were NOT in the mood. Finally, Robin gets them to promise to sing a short song at the end of the quest. They agree to it as long as it is at the end. Robin then arrives on stage in front of the riflery range and says, "It is the end my men, and we shall do my favorite!" The men respond with, "Oh he tricked us, he knew it was the end" and, "Not his favorite, not again." They all step up on stage and an extremely enthusiastic Justin Ingold sings "Let's hit the hay my hearties!" with his men singing in a very sour manner behind him. This wasn't pre-planned, Justin planned the end within seconds of wrapping up Campfire and the others just fell into place. Great stuff!
